Nietzche on Hardship

ep 6 of ‘Philosophy – a guide to happiness.’ this is the last episode of the series

Episode 6: Nietzsche on Hardship – British philosopher Alain De Botton explores Friedrich Nietzsche’s (1844-1900) dictum that any worthwhile achievements in life come from the experience of overcoming hardship. For him, any existence that is too comfortable is worthless, as are the twin refugees of drink or religion.

Building a decent (5.1) surround set

I’ve been planning my 5.1 surround project for quite some time. I wanted to use only high-end or near high-end components from between 1980-1999. Of course all second hand. Today I acquired a set of Canton Karat 60 speakers with a Plus C sub for a very nice price. The Karat’s were originally bought for fl. 1.555,- in 1989 and are still like new, I even got the original receipt.

From left to right: Karat 60, Plus C, CT-1000

The set-up so far:

The main amplifier will be an A-1050, delivering some clean power to a pair of modified (star/filter) CT-1000’s. The 1st A-1000 will power the Karat 60 set, as the rear speakers. And the 2nd A-1000 will deliver the signal to the center speaker and the Plus C subwoofer. All speakers are closed box.

To do/get list;

  • A good center speaker (audiolab/canton/kef)
  • A decent 5.1 (7.1) Dolby digital/DTS decoder with pre-amp output (this component can be new of course)
  • Add direct inputs to all amplifiers
  • Get extra insurance for structural damage to my house and the neighbors house. The amount of pressure this set can produce will be insane.

I’d like to keep it as much German and/or Japanese. Please leave any tips for the missing components in the comment field below.
